About Maasai Marketplace

From the Hands of Artisans to the Heart of the World

Maasai Marketplace is a Kenyan multivendor platform created to connect talented artisans, cultural entrepreneurs and ethical local brands with buyers in Kenya and around the world.

Why we exist

Closing the distance between talent and opportunity

Across Kenya, skilled artisans create remarkable products rooted in culture, creativity and generations of knowledge. Yet many remain separated from customers by geography, limited digital skills, expensive retail channels and unreliable access to payments and delivery.

Maasai Marketplace was established to close that gap: giving independent sellers a trusted digital storefront, practical support and a fair route to wider markets—without asking them to surrender the identity behind their work.

Our mission

Market access with dignity

Expand opportunity for Kenyan artisans and local enterprises through trusted technology, authentic storytelling and fair digital commerce.

Our vision

African craft, globally valued

A future where African craftsmanship is respected worldwide and communities participate meaningfully in the value their culture creates.

Our promise

Trade built on trust

Champion authenticity, transparency, cultural respect and practical opportunity for every verified seller and customer.

Where we begin

Rooted in Kenya’s artisan communities

Our initial focus is on communities and enterprises in Narok, Kajiado and Samburu—regions rich in cultural knowledge, craft traditions and entrepreneurial energy. We are building a model that can grow responsibly across Kenya while protecting the distinct stories and standards of each community.

Narok

Our operational home and first community focus, connecting local makers and cultural enterprises to digital customers.

Kajiado

Supporting artisan-led businesses whose products combine living Maasai heritage with contemporary design.

Samburu

Creating access for distinctive craft traditions and community enterprises to reach new markets with their identity intact.

10%

A clear marketplace model

Simple, transparent commission

Maasai Marketplace charges a 10% marketplace commission on each completed sale. The remaining 90% of the product value stays with the seller, before any separately disclosed payment, delivery or statutory charges.

Clear fees help sellers price confidently and understand the value they receive from the platform.

Artisan empowerment

More than a place to list products

Digital market access

A professional storefront that helps makers reach customers beyond their immediate location.

Seller development

Practical guidance on product presentation, customer service, pricing and reliable fulfilment.

Authentic storytelling

Space for sellers to explain the people, skills, materials and meaning behind their work.

Trusted commerce

Clear platform rules, verified seller identities and structured customer-support processes.

Women and youth enterprise

Focused pathways for underrepresented entrepreneurs to participate in the digital economy.

Long-term growth

Tools and insight that help small enterprises build repeat demand and sustainable income.

Seller verification

Trust starts before a shop goes live

1. Identity confirmation

We review seller identity and essential business information before approval.

2. Store review

Seller profiles, contact details and fulfilment readiness are checked for completeness.

3. Product standards

Listings must be accurate, appropriately represented and consistent with marketplace policies.

4. Ongoing accountability

Customer feedback, order performance and conduct inform continued participation.

Cultural authenticity

Respecting the source of every story

Culture is not a decoration. It is knowledge, identity and livelihood.

We promote accurate attribution, honest product descriptions and respectful representation. Sellers are expected to disclose who made a product, where it comes from and which materials or techniques are used. We oppose misleading cultural claims, exploitative sourcing and mass-produced goods presented as handmade.

Measurable social impact

We will report progress, not invent it

As the marketplace grows, we are committed to measuring and publishing indicators that show whether opportunity is genuinely reaching sellers and communities.

Verified sellers

Active sellers who have completed the marketplace verification process.

Women and youth-led businesses

Participation and performance of enterprises led by women and young entrepreneurs.

County reach

The number of Kenyan counties represented by active sellers.

Orders and repeat customers

Completed orders, repeat-purchase rates and dependable fulfilment.

Seller revenue

Value generated for sellers through completed marketplace sales.

Training and mentorship

Sellers supported through practical learning and business-development activities.

Baseline figures and reporting periods will be published once verified operational data is available.
